The Anna Magdalena Notebook is a particularly intimate and unusual set of didactic pieces, composed by J.S. Bach as practice material for his second wife. Such a notebook would have been commonplace in any musical household, containing a large variety of music often transcribed by the students themselves, and from which an initial repertoire would develop. By its very nature, this set of pieces has become a vital source of information regarding Keyboard teaching in the Baroque era, andespecially regarding the methods and thinking behind one of the world's greatest composers.
